The energy beneath everything

At the heart of Steampuff lies the Primordial Breath, an unstable source of energy around which the city was built. Its two currents are connected parts of one system, not forces of good and evil.

Hot Flow powers the elevated platforms, transport, and climate of The Stratus. Cold Flow cools the reactors, stabilizes the foundations, and contains the dangerous energy below the streets. The city survives because both continue moving.

The cost of imbalance

Drawing warmth upward shifts the burden downward. The Great Thaw and the Deep Frost are two experiences of the same arrangement. Interrupting a current can threaten the whole city; preserving the arrangement without change can condemn the lower districts to deeper cold.

Alchemy offers power, but never a simple escape from consequence. Extracts have energetic, biological, and resonant effects. Their reactions depend on origin, combination, exposure, and the person or machine they touch. The transformation of Beast is one terrible example of that uncertainty.

The possibility of balance

The oldest records describe experiments that sought to reunite the currents in a controlled cycle. A project called the Balance Core may have offered a way to stabilize both without permanently forcing the cost onto one part of the city.

No complete working Core is confirmed. The archives are fragmented and parts of the research have vanished. But the possibility matters: the present system may not be the only one the city can build.

Finding the truth will require knowledge from above, experience from below, and people willing to question the stories that have kept them apart.
